Larry Eustachy, the head basketball coach at Iowa State, was photographed sometime this past Winter at a fraternity party, drinking beer and schmoozing with co-eds.
In the past few hours, Eustachy has been put on paid leave, indicating that he will eventually lose his job.
Good.
Ten years ago, there would have been no question that Eustachy would have been let go immediately. But these days, he's able to blame his 'alcoholism' for his problems, rather than to simply admit he has made a serious error in judgement.
Does Eustachy deserve a second chance? Someday. But not today. Today he should pay the price for his irresponsible actions. If I had a child playing basketball at Iowa State, they would be transferring if Eustachy is allowed to keep his job. Part of coaching at the college level includes teaching kids how to deal with life, to set an example. Eustachy has set the poorest example.
